Visiting Venice for a really short late deal at the weekend any advice on must dos and possibly transportation for,the weekend please?.

Arrive at Venice airport at 930 am, hotel is in Mestre so don’t need to go there until the evening, so I guess we need to get from Marco Polo to Venice on day one, then from Venice to hotel at night, into Venice and return the following day, finally the last day an early flight home so from Mestre to the airport.
Anyone been before and can offer any advice, seems like different transport companies offer different options, just wondered what was best, or most cost effective!,
Thanks

There’s quite a good bus service from the airport which takes you to Piazzale Roma and from there you can get a vapretto to anywhere in Venice or just walk. Or from the airport you can go the dock area and get a vaporetto to Venice, there are a couple of choices, we use the Arancio as that drops us practically at our hotel.
I believe there is a good bus service from Mestre to Venice (Piazzale Roma) and presume that there is a good service from Mestre to the airport or there will be taxis I suppose.

Check out the Marco Polo airport website it has good info and links to all the public transport sites

Thanks mate
Haven’t got far with travel arrangements yet! I’ve booked secret Doge tour, plan on popping in the basilica, booked a food tour, planning on a gondola ride while over there and considering a private meal cooked by a chef on an old wooden boat!!
Exciting times!

Secret Itineries tour is excellent.  They take you from top to bottom (literally) of the palace with very informative talks and then they let you out into the public parts to wander for as long as you want.

Lots of good restaurants if you stay away from the very busy areas of St Marks and the Rialto, we try and avoid those during the day. We aim to visit the quieter areas during the day such as Dorsoduro, Cannaregio or Castillo.  It can be manic with cruise ship folks and day trippers

we stayed in the hotel central in Mestre (nothing special about it tho) - but there was a direct bus outside that took is directly to venice itself - took around 20 minutes or so?

we arrived from mestre railway and was guys opening selling drugs in the daytime - I wouldn't really want to be hanging around there after dark tho...

and you could buy bus tickets from the local newsagent - but a strange thing happened, as we got a bus ticket and a receipt and 2 guys got on the bus, they looked like ticket inspectors (and had a handheld device) - but they took our tickets away and got off the bus..happened quickly too..
