When just staying over on the way to somewhere I use chain motels which I book through hotels.com or similar. If we are staying for longer I try to find Ma and Pa/historical hotels by searching google maps around the area we are going and then researching the results.
As Cloth Ears mentioned, if you are heading to a national park type location, then options can be limited and pricey. A couple of years ago we paid around £220 for one night in Death Valley and £280 for a night in Monument Valley.
You are best starting with a route, you can do a loop, starting and finishing at the same place (can be cheaper for flights and car hire) or arrive and depart at different locations and have a one way car rental. You will also need to look at how far you are prepared to drive per day etc |
