I'm looking to buy a full set with the bag and everything I need for about £50-60.

Obviously that's not a lot of money, however there are tons going on eBay so I figure there's a bargain to be had. I just need to know what's good.

So what brands of golf clubs are good and which are the budget ones to avoid?

For that kind of money, I wouldn't be too worried about the brand etc - I started playing with a cheap set of Donnay clubs as I hadn't played for years and didn't want to spend much on them in case I hardly used them as I would have then considered it a waste of money

And then about 5 or 6 years ago, I bought a set of Ping irons from my boss and I am still using them as I don't get to play as often as I would like so can't justify the expense on a new set (even though I have seen some I would quite like)

My advice would be to get a cheap set first, don't worry about the brand, and see if you enjoy playing

Don't be drawn into the marketing game, as not all clubs will suit everyone so just because professional 'X' uses a particular brand doesn't mean they will suit you

Check Gumtree also as it'll be easier for you to check the condition of the clubs yours buying that it will buying from ebay.

Also have a look in your local driving range as they might have older 2nd hand sets you can try before you buy

If you are just starting in golf, buy whatever set your budget will allow. The brand won't make any difference. SportsWorld do cheap Dunlop sets with bags etc for not much money.

Thanks all for the advice. You're right the brand isn't going to matter, I guess I just want to avoid looking like a numpty. I've worked out what the top makes are and yep they attract alot of bids so don't think I'll bother pursuing any awesome bargains right now. Those Wilson ones in the classifieds look fine for my needs (thanks BB3Lions) but they are miles away. However I have seen some similar ones on Gumtree (thanks gken74) so will see if I can get those instead. I'll also make sure to ask about the condition of the grips (thanks Toasty).
