This show SEEMS like a rip off of various forerunners, such as "Ren and Stimpy", but R&S, while an interesting curiosity of a show,is nowhere near as funny as Grim! While R&S relied on building on in-jokes and pure gross-out(and often non-sequitir)humor,Grim keeps the humor and plots rolling smoothly, with only tangential reliance on Evil Con CArne(another Maxwell Atoms 'toon)as the related humor.
The Grim Reaper somehow loses a bet with two kids:brain-dead and psychotic Billy and his friend(if you can really call her that)Mandy,a dour, cold and calculating girl. The twists they go through are often a manifestation of something stupid Billy wishes for and/or does and are fairly predictable, but they are done with such wild abandon and wry humor that one feels like they are aimed at adults rather than kids!
This show also shares common traits with the likes of "Ed,Edd and Eddy","Johnny Bravo","CAtdog" among others, but it seems to be more able to cross the bridge from kids entertainment to adult "guilty pleasure" with its humor. "Duck Dodgers" would probably be the only other toon I could say--off the top of my head--that would fit this category, too. This may say more about my sick sense of humor than necessarily the show itself, but its still one of my favorite Cartoon Network offerings!
