Totally agree - I dare say that if Ronnie had won last night on a decider, the protagonists would have then deemed it the best final since Davis/Taylor, irrespective of if Selby had played the same game as we have just witnessed.
He played dogged match-play snooker and succeeded where others failed. You can't doubt his ability as he has just challenged the best players in the world to get to the final, and then beaten the most gifted player to ever have picked up a cue. You don't win by just playing safe - he played many a brave/gutsy shot, but tempered it with a bit of thought - i.e what happens if I miss this so better try and cover myself if I do! Thinking it is clever, but putting it into practice and where it counts with the pressure it brings, is only something most of us could dream of!
The above ability & performance traits are what's needed to win. Tony Drago was one of the most exciting players ever to play snooker, but he didn't win much. Solid Snooker wins matches & championships - and unfortunately for some ..... that's just boring.
Banging on & slaying Selby as another Ebdon is both an insult to two exceptional Snooker players. Just because they don't have the aura or playing style about them that makes them instantly "likeable", doesn't mean that they don't deserve their respective WC wins.
I had hoped Ronnie would have come through and was rooting for him - the sad fact is, he was just not good enough on the day! |
