Hi all.

I have often recommended the 70-200 f4 type lenses to people with full frame cameras as the iso abilities now is so good etc.

I may be buying a similar lens soon and wonder about this Tamron, which to me seems to make buying an f4 kind of a bad move due it's price (unless of course weight is a big issue)

Does anyone here have any opinions on this lens? Thanks

The Tamron G2 is supposedly an excellent lens, right up there with the best from Nikon and Canon. With lenses like this it will come down to weight (846g vs 1470g ish) and budget (although 3rd party will be cheaper).

Thanks. It's weight is my only consideration in that I can get this g2 even cheaper than the Nikon f4 model (going grey market of course).

It will be my present to myself for Christmas, reckon I'll go f2.8 and join the gym

I have the G1 version of the Tamron, and am happy with it (they don't make the G2 in Sony A Mount version), the G2 offers improved coatings and a shorter minimum focus distance, so I would expect it to be an excellent lens.

You also forgot the better weather sealing, sharper wide open and better VC. As you say though the G1 is already a great lens

I went from a canon 70-200 f4 IS L to the new(ish) sigma 100-400 f5-6.3 DG OS C and I don’t miss the f4 as it it sharpest wide open and I get double the focal length for similar weight. Very nice lens in my opinion and does not break the bank.

I have a 150-600 so the 100-400 wouldn't really be one I'd look at. It would be for general stuff so while f4 might be ok f6.3 wouldn't really suit me for anything when the light drops.

I like the idea if f2.8 for the price so reckon I'll go and put up with the weight
