It's quite a difficult question to answer and really comes down to what range you're taking photos at, the iPhone image quality will be better at close range but as it can't zoom far the Sony will do better.
Although the Sony looks like it should have a bigger sensor, it has a similarly small one to the iPhone at just 1/2.3in which is in practice is one of the smallest sensors there is and the same one used in most high end mobile phones and superzoom cameras like the HX400. However the mobile phone manufacturers are able to use the phone's high performance hardware to heavily process the output from the sensor to produce incredibly good shots from such a small sensor. I have a similar Galaxy Note 8 and although I have many other cameras, I use my phone a lot for photos and I'm always amazed at how good the photos are. It's not just the image quality but the speed and convenience as well as I can bring up the camera app near instantly then take a photo straight after which after a couple more taps I can straight away share with friends.
A couple of years ago I purchased a phone that had a poor camera and I was surprised how much I missed the camera, I spent a while trying other solutions but ultimately realised the solution was to get a phone with a better camera.
The Sony on the other hand while it has a similarly sized sensor won't produce photos that look as good but its big advantage is that huge zoom lens which will allow you to zoom in far further than the iPhone. If you're taking a lot of photos at range then the Sony is going to suit you better.
I try to give balanced information but as you can probably tell if I was given the choice between a weaker phone and a better camera or just a better phone with a great camera I'd probably go for the latter. |
