Just in case 50mp isn’t enough for people, here is the new Sony:

Sony A7R IV is official: 61MP, 15 stops of dynamic range, 10fps and 5-axis IBIS!

The reviews will be interesting as I’m sure the spec alone isn’t the full picture, but I’m sure we are into complete overkill for most people

And for when 61Mp isn't enough "the new camera features an evolved Pixel Shift Multi Shooting[xi] mode that composites up to 16 full-resolution images. In this mode, the camera precisely shifts the sensor in one pixel or half-pixel increments to capture 16 separate pixel-shifted images containing a total of 963.2 million pixels of data, which are then composited into a 240.8 million pixel (19008 x 12672 pixels) image

The purpose of the R series has always been high resolution and with increased competition from medium format mirrorless cameras and other full frame mirrorless cameras I do think there is some logic to pushing for a higher resolution.  It's apparently a brand new sensor so could be be improvements in others areas although it looks like they've put a lot of effort into improvements all over the camera.

It's curious to see the A7R4 and still no sign of an A7S3 yet nor the constantly rumoured A7000.

No doubt that this will be a cracking camera but I've reached my limit of where I want to go with MP. AT 45.7mp file sizes are on the limit, and of course for a lot of times you just don't need this many. The MP wars will continue though, Nikon has bought the same 61mp sensor so we should expect that in the Z8

Yes odd still no sign of the A7000 or A7S3 which has been rumoured for a while.

Maybe they have been waiting for a new generation of sensors or the S isn’t as big a seller to for the same refresh frequency?

I’m still using my A7.1 but will upgrade to a A7.3 when the price is right secondhand, for the better AF.  I don’t need more than 24MP and even the 11MP with the APSC crop is more than enough when using it as a small setup (with the 16-50 pancake)

I really like the size of the Sony FE cameras and would probably still own one if they were only APSC

I am disappointed they haven't made an A7000 or something like an A6500 with a mini SLR body, I've got an NEX-6 which is great with the 16-50mm but I find it awful with anything better as the body is too small.  I was tempted by the A6500 on Prime Day but I think it would annoy me as well whereas a small SLR type body that could handle the 18-200mm better would be a good all in one solution.  I have looked at the A7 series but I think it's too close to the D750 for my use at the moment.

Officially Sony have said they don't know what they can do with the S series as they want to offer an improvement, I've have thought they'd have at least given it some of the other mk3 improvements (better viewfinder, batterylife etc.) but suspect it can't be a big seller for them to be getting so little attention.

61mp is probably Overkill for most, but if it can do 10fps and the autofocus is as good as advertised and manages to have the image quality it would seem a bit of a bargain (relative to others in it's class)

Price is definitely on the money (by today’s standards) but Sony don’t have lossless compression, and as far as I’m aware don’t have mRaw. 100-120mb   files are going to be a nightmare. I know there’s the option for compression, but you buy a camera like this for ultimate IQ so compressed files seems a bit counter intuitive to me.

All good points, I'd still like one though

I read a lot of people complaining that the Sony compression is lossy - BUT the tests I've read where folks have compared compressed and uncompressed suggest that any losses are only in extreme cases.

It's also worth noting that many are calling for Sony to include a lower res RAW option, EG a 40Mp RAW.

If you take a moment to think about it, that is a 'lossy' compressed 61Mp Image - you've compressed it by discarding 21MP of your image!

It would be interesting to compare how the IQ of an image degrades by each of the options - it may be that Sony's 'lossy' compression is actually better in terms of quality / file size than reduced size RAW.
