First of all, I had to re-register as AVF didn't recognise my previous identity!

Anyway, we have had the tablet for several years and it has been fine.  Yesterday while my husband was using it, it stopped and only showed the Samsung logo and nothing could be done to rescue it.  I have read various methods on the Internet, such as holding down both the on/off button and the volume button for at least 10 seconds, but this was to no avail.

I did manage to see the tablet charging when it was plugged in and I also did the "two button" method while it was plugged in.  This resulted in a message coming up with things to do.  I tried both and the first didn't work at all but the second resulted in another message saying the following -

0010 Mode
Product name GT-N8013
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD : NO
CURRENT BINARY : Samsung Official
system status: official

then it says Downloading.....
Do not turn off target!!"

The first part of this is in very small writing at the top left hand corner of the screen and the second part in bigger letters in the middle.   I left the tablet like that and went to bed!  This morning it is back to the frozen screen again.

Sorry to ramble but I thought it was best to let you know as much as possible.

Any help would be gratefully received!

As there was no-one replying I decided to take the tablet to a local computer man.  He is going to sort it for us.  Hopefully!

He couldn't do anything, neither could a dedicated tablet/phone repair shop!  So we have bought a new Kindle Fire 10 which is great.

The problem with any of these sealed devices is that there is no actual physical button to clear out the more primitive parts of the memory.   .. unless the unit is cracked open, and a connector called a JTAG placed accross a specific chip...and the primitive code rewriten .
The only external method is...

No problem follow the steps bellow to factory restore you Galaxy note 10.1

- Turn Off your Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 device.

- Wait for 10 seconds, Then move to the next step.

- Press and hold Volume Up key   Power key.

- Keep pressing the above keys until the Samsung Logo appears,Then release Power key only.

- When you see Factory reset / System Recovery menu on screen release the Volume Up Key.

- Use Volume Down key to select Wipe Data / Factory Reset option.

- Use Power key to confirm the operation.

- You need to use the Volume Down key again to select "Yes -- delete all user data"

- Use Power key to confirm.

- After performing the hard reset, Select Reboot System Now option, And confirm it using Power key.

- Now the phone will reboots, Wait for it to be fully on and then you can start using it.

Notice: The Hard Reset / Factory Reset operation will delete anything that are saved in your phone's internal memory, So make a backup of your data in case you can access them.

But remember all these devices have a limited lifetime, and are not designed for repair.. all components soldered in for example. Were they using sockets, the devices would be twice as bulky, ten times less reliable and twice as expensive and heavy.

All that was tried by me and two computer technicians!  Nothing worked so I think your last paragraph hit the nail on the head!
