Clip on speakers, mono into stereo speakers?

I'mI inclined to think that there is an out of specification headphone jack socket in the tablet. If one of the contacts was even a little bit short it might be failing to make contact with the jackplug on the  speakers. Perhaps the speaker jackplug might also be a tiny bit under diameter.
If that is the case  a solution would be one of those extension cables from the pound shop with 3.5mm plugs and sockets.
