The index controllers are the most advanced controllers and once games take full advantage of the finger tracking like what Alyx shows, they will be incredible.
However I do agree that they are heavily flawed. Ignoring the RMA/QA issues which have forced a way too high percentage of users to get replacements, my main issues with them are:
1. Subpar battery life
2. Average quality buttons
3. Below average joysticks
4. Poor ergonomics
You get used to them, so its not a problem but I really feel like Valve, given how long they tested them for, should have released a controller more ergonomic and comfortable than the Rift S controller, but they clearly aren't there. They also clearly just aren't good at making a controller. The basics, that is the buttons, the joysticks, aren't up to scratch for the price tag. Then when you add in reliability... Its just a really mixed bag.
Its their second time creating a controller so I can cut them some slack and the fact is they've INNOVATED this gen with the control scheme whilst Oculus chose to just do a boring refresh and not try to further advance VR.
Regardless, I think they're the way forwards for VR, especially after the Alyx Demo. Seeing him put separate bullets into each chamber was incredible. |
