I would not put your CCTV on your NAS, period. You are creating a single point of failure for all of your systems and placing overhead and burden on what is essentially your media storage. Far better to use an NVR for your CCTV and leave the NAS to deal with media storage. You can back up your NVR to your NAS if you want.
I also agree with the above advice on using SSDs in a NAS. SSDs will provide you very little performance benefit. I have around 1Tb of music on my NAS and worst case is it takes 3 -4 seconds to start a track playing. Normally its under 2 seconds.
Most modern NAS will let you back-up to the cloud, an external drive or a second NAS so do not get too hung up on this, there are plenty of options. If data is critical you certainly do not want your back-up data in the same physical location as your live data (and definitely not in the same physical unit). If for any reason your NAS was critically damaged or lost (Theft / Fire / Flood / Lightning Strike) your mirrors would probably be lost also.
I think that you need to go back and re-evaluate how much storage you need now and in the near future (12-18 months) and make that your starting point. As @Sloppy Bob has said, using small drives is pointless. Buy some appropriately sized drives that are designed for NAS use (WD Red for example)
There is a good article here on the Pro's and Con's of NVR vs NAS for CCTV
What's best for your surveillance storage... NAS or NVR?
if I was looking at a NAS for your needs, with your budget, I think that the Synology DS918 4 Bay Desktop NAS Enclosure at £493 would be a good starting point
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Synology-DS918-Bay-Desktop-Enclosure/dp/B075DDZ894/ref=sr_1_1?ascsubtag=trd-1863822436053066973-21&keywords=Synology DiskStation DS1517 &qid=1554371244&s=gateway&sr=8-1
with a couple of WD Red 6 TB NAS Hard Drives at £170 each
That would cost around £840 and would provide expansion, memory upgrade and SSD Cache if you need it and 12 Tb of storage. Use the remaining money to buy some cloud storage or an external HD for backup.
There are other NAS available but this model is very highly regarded.
This then means that you will need separate funding for your CCTV whether it is an NVR or additional surveillance station licences (which are £50 each or £310 for 8). Either route is beyond your existing budget. |
