Sky Q HDD format for a NAS (Synology)

Hi All,

Has anyone managed to reformat a Sky Q HDD and successfully us it in a Synology NAS?

Do you mean you want the Synology NAS to be able to record from Sky?

If so, sorry can't help.

Or do you mean you want to take a HDD out from a Sky box and use it in a Synology NAS for data?

If so the NAS formats the drive when you insert it into it, so I wouldn't imagine it matters what format it is now.

IIRC Sky also encrypt the recordings, so if one were to move it to another platform in the hope of reading the content, the copy protection would beat you and you'd have no choice but to nuke it and start again.

Don't think anyone will have tried as Sky Q kit is owned by Sky not the subscriber and has to be returned to them at the end of the contract.

Sky's HDCP encryption can be defeated by using certain HDMI splitters. Ive copied content from my Sky Q box onto an external hard drive via my laptop using a Elgato HD60 capture device, whilst maintaining the High Def quality.
Sounds complicated but it really isn't.

That's a game capture card and costs upwards of £155. Bit of overkill just to get stuff of a sky box. On the old Sky  box you could connect a DVD recorder and copy stuff off that way. The only things that you couldn't do were movies and pay-per-view. The only problem was it was real time.

And you also lost the HD picture quality.

I don’t think a game capture card is overkill if you are going to make use of it. I’ve used mine to copy loads of footage which has saved me from buying it on Blu-ray, as well as some content that isn’t even available to purchase anywhere.
