Sky Q to Sky Q as Access Point

Hi, help needed please, i am trying to find out if i can reconfigure a Sky Q Router to another Sky Q Router as an Access Point, as my Grandson cannot get Wifi in his Bedroom/Study He has an Ethernet Connection in there, i have successfully used BT Hubs in my own home as Access points for the same purpose, downloading the instructions from the net, but canot seem to find instructions on the Sky Q scenario?

I am only a retired Bricklayer so limited on my knowledge, but i do persevere lol.

Where does the Ethernet cable in his room go to?

Hi Puntoboy, thanks for such a quick reply, it is connected to the Main Sky Q Box in the Hall where the Main line comes in.

Get a small access point for his room. Using that Ethernet cable to connect it to the main router.

Thats what i want to use the Spare Sky Q Router for, convert it to an access point, save him the cost of buying an access point, i can follow the instructions i downloaded, but when i change the IP Address as instructed and disable DHCP as instructed, ithe router reboots but does not save the new settings? i then have to reset back to factory default. tryed so many times now so decided to ask for some help?

Could you post a link to the instructions you are using and we'll take a look at see if there anything is amiss with them (unless it's the FAQ posted in this forums - we're familiar with that one.)

I've no experience with Sky Q, but some years ago a few router suppliers kind of "locked" their equipment so you couldn't change it. If it turns out that that's the case with Sky Q and you don't have anything else to hand, a basic AP can be procured for as little as 20-30 GBP these days.

Hi mickevh, thank you for your interest and help, here are the instructions i am using,i know the second hub is not a Sky Q but all i heave read on the forums says it should work with either?

Here's a step by step for this...

Router (Q Hub)

1) Connect to the wifi on your Q hub, login to the administration area at http://192.168.0.1

2) Go to Advanced > Lan IP setup.

3) Configure Starting IP Address: to 192.168.0.3

4) Apply changes (Q hub will reboot).

Access Point (SR102)

1) Connect to the wifi on your SR102, login to the administration area at http://192.168.0.1

2) Configure the wireless settings as preferred, you can mimic the Q hub wifi for a seamless experience or give it a different ssid  completely.

3)  Go to Advanced > Lan IP setup.

4) Change IP address to 192.168.0.2  and untick Use Router as DHCP Server.

5) Apply settings (SR102 will reboot)

Connection

1) Connect the SR102 to the Q hub using an ethernet cable (any ports you want) and you've finished, it's now an access point via your Q hub

That all looks good, and is pretty much what we advocate in the "Using Two Routers Together FAQ" pinned in this forum.

The only thing I can suggest is that the SR102 has it's firmware "locked" so it won't accept the changes. Some years ago a few ISP's - particulaly those that "rented" you their router rather than "sold" it to you - did so. Maybe it's worth having a Google and see if the SR102 was so afflicted if no-one here knows.

Hi mickevh, maybe i did not explain correctly, it is a Sky Q that i want to link to the Main Sky Q as my Grandson had a Brand New Sky Q that was not needed.

No worries - the process is fundamentally the same whatever equipment you use; it's basically about preventing IP addressing conflicts (which is a "bad thing.")

I'm afraid I have no experience of SkyQ, so cannot comment on whether there's any particular issue with that kit. Hopefully someone else here will know.
