No it's not fitted into a slot as the bottom case is removed and the HD taken out, replaced in bracket and reconnected.

There is not an adapter on the disk either - It works in another Dell laptop.
Straight swap.
Thanks

Fair enough.

Are the models the same?. Do you have the model number in each case?. Even between models in the same range you can have variances.

Different models, but it confirms the SSD is working....

Yes but something is not happy in the second case.  Sorry missed the model number in the post title .

It just looks like it is a lose combined sata and power cable that plugs in to a "screwed" down hard disk.

If there is no damage to that cable and its securely home then it would either suggest that the laptop doesn't like both drives ....  There are some recorded cases on the interweb of crucial ones not working but who knows ....

the cable is fine as the old drive works fine when reconnected.
I've scoured the internet but cannot find anything that I haven't already tried.

Sorry I didn't mean to say it was loose when just plugged into the SSD, I meant it wasn't like a lot of laptops that have a fixed connector that the HDD\SSD slides on to.  With yours it is only connected at one end.

Unless there is a physical weird pin out on the cable or a strange tolerance that is causing an issue then you are looking a bit stuck.  You have already updated the bios so not much else you can do.  Although rare it could just be a picky laptop ...

Is This the same as yours?
Did you disconnect the internal battery before replacing ssd
try cloning with Macrium Reflect Free
I guess you used a sata to usb converter. i use this
Have you tried just plugging in the ssd to the adapter but NOT fixing it in place back in the laptop. Don't forget to plug battery back in.
I tend to agree with chuck mountain that it seems a connection issue?

yes it's the same.
The drive is cloned ok with acronis - as it works in another Dell.
Have tried just plugging in and trying without fixing it in.
The old drive is picked up straight away so the connection "seems" ok
thanks

Only thing i can think of is a voltage issue where by it's not detecting enough voltage to power drive. Only guessing though. Have you tried the other ssd you bought, or do you have any old ssd's laying about just to try. Have you tried installing it as a fresh drive. Delete all partitions and simple NTFS format?
