Yeah, Valve have thoroughly smashed the old PC gaming scene. If they'd kept the DRM aspects of steam separate from the storefront and other advertising aspects then they could have had a universal product used by everyone, more successful than even SecureROM was. And the less said about monetising modding the better.
Of course they're not solely to blame, quite a few major game developers didn't make the effort to support multiple platforms and encourage competition between them. Had we not a near-monopoly there'd be much bigger incentives to develop interoperability.
Unfortunately Microsoft's effort, Games for Windows, wasn't successful, Some major server issues on release of several games gave it a bad reputation. Although I always found it to be an excellent service.
Fast startup (hybrid shutdown/hibernate) has been standard since Windows 8, but the Restart option was always a full shutdown/startup. Are you sure that's changed recently? |
