spell check not working

Hi  guys    HP laptop  widows 7,  64 bit,      up until  2 days ago  my automatic  spell check  was working  fine  IE   underlining  miss spelt  words,  now  its not and ive I  tried   my browsers  (chrome ) settings>advanced>  but  when I get  to  select    english   I cant  as it is greyed  out   but even  USA english  wich can be selected  does not underline  deliberate  misspelt words ,  I have even tried  system restore ( and lost the use of half  of my desktop icons )  dohhhhhh,  also  reset   defaults  on chrome,  in one of my searches  there was a video  telling you how to  overide  the  greyed out   English  that  did not work,    any suggestions  would be grateful   cheers

In Chrome settings\advanced\languages.

Check what languages are installed under "language" if English UK is missing click on add to import it, then under "spell check" see if you can toggle the switch for English UK and toggle off US English.

If you still can't get it to work you might have to remove your Chrome profile (hidden in Windows userdata folder) and do a clean install, be sure to backup bookmarks and any other data.

Alternatively try Vivaldi browser which is based off Chrome, it has it's own separate settings menu but it does not yet have the spell check section in that new menu, you must right click in a text box, select from the context menu language settings and it will bring you to the same Chrome style spell check settings.

Just on the off chance I'd double check the Windows control panel language settings in case anything there somehow changed which affected the spell checker in IE.

HI   I have  been back to my  Chrome  settings   and   found  by  selecting "add another language"  then  the  greyed out English   was obtainable  so I selected  it  and  relaunched   but  the spell checker  still does NOT  work,  but all is fine    in  OPERA  browser ????
