I have been charged with buying a new laptop for the swimming club. Basic needs but here are the 'specifics':

Size: Standard size  - 13"-15" - doesn't need to be portable.
Budget: Up to £300
Resolution: No resolution requirements
Screen: not fussy on matt or gloss
Use: use to go online to access websites for coaching, using Office 365
Battery: will mainly be used from home so not a huge issue
Preferred Brand: well I have a voucher code for HP so them I guess?

Thats about it - 2 pet peeves though - constant updates and it being super slow. As it won't be used for anything too onerous, I'm hoping speed won't be an issue.

As its not for me I am a bit stumped. I'm Apple to the core.

thanks

With £300 you are aiming at the budget end of the market. Speed will be an issue so don't expect anything fast. At this price level, I would tell you the minimum specs to look for.
4GB RAM or greater
120GB Storage or better - avoid those with 32GB eMMC storage
Avoid chromebooks they can't use office 365
All laptops with windows are updated every two weeks sometimes sooner if a critical update is needed
If you want speed look for a laptop with an SSD (solid state drive) this dramatically speeds up boot/shutdown/program loading times. Old mechanical Hard drives will slow down the computer especially as it becomes cluttered as more and more data is added etc
