I have never used sound over displayport so hopefully I am just missing something obvious.

I bought mywife a new monitor, AOC Q3279VWFD8.

At first I connected it up through DVI and used the speakers sound entered via the audio jack from the PC.

Sound worked fine, the picture was awful though (AMD drivers suggested a problem with gthe cable)

I decided to hook it up via Displayport instead, this fixed the image problems but now there is no sound.

The monitor shows up under the sound options, it all seems fine and tests fine but no sound. I have set it up as the default sound device, and even disabled other sound devices but no sound.

I can’t get sound via the audio jack either when connected via Displayport for images.

I am probablymissing something really obvious but I am not sure what

Graphics card is an old r9 270 with latest drivers, soon to be replaced however.

Can anyone help?

So to fill in the gaps you've got a DisplayPort cable connected to the monitor and a 3.5mm stereo cable from the monitor to the speakers?

Is the sound device you're using explicitly named as a DisplayPort output because HDMI audio output was supported first in a lot of cases, so if it's just named monitor output then it may only be for HDMI.

When you say it 'tests fine' are you talking about the test option in the right click menu for a sound device or some other test option. Do you get sound on the test?

Not quite.

The monitor has built in speakers.

I have hooked it up to the pc via DVI for video and audio jack for the sound, which worked fine except the video want great.

Then I tried connecting the PC to the monitor just by Displayport but now there is no sound from the monitors speakers.

The output on the graphics card states is a Displayport connection but now you mention it in the sound settings it is labelling it as Hdmi

The 270 et al. can be equipped with both DisplayPort and HDMI outputs so even if your particular one only has DisplayPort outputs the support for HDMI audio is still there.

I don't know whether the Pitcairn chips from 2012 support Displayport Audio. It sounds like they may not have done if you're only seeing an HDMI audio device. Does anything else show up if you right click on an empty space in the playback devices list and tick the show disabled/disconnected devices options?

If your card doesn't have an HDMI output you may find HDMI audio works over a passive DisplayPort to HDMI adapter or cable.
