Faulty Screen?

A bit of help needed please,
My wife says this was working fine when she put it in the laptop bag but looked like this 20 mins later. Its not had any screen issues before and hasn't been dropped.

Laptop works fine connected to an external monitor.
The lined screen stays the same regardless of how the lid is positioned.
I have had the screen out and can't see any wear on the cable or screen connection.

I don't want to buy a new screen only to find out its software!
Anyone know if this fault likely to be the screen, cable or graphics card?

If the laptop works fine when connected to an external monitor then that rules out the graphics card. HP tend to supply the lid as a single item nowadays. Have you checked to see if the machine is within warranty ?

its a about 3yrs old now so no warranty unfortunately. I have managed to remove the lCD screen from the lid to check the connections. Replaced everything but still no joy.

So probably the screen then?

So you have tried another known working connector and still no joy. Would certainly point to the screen itself. Might be worth trying ebay for a whole lid and/or screen before looking for 3rd parties for the screen itself.

You can see the graphics are being displayed, though obviously very faint, and as you said your graphics gpu is okay as it drives an external source. It could be either a cable fault or the LCD. Cables do go faulty due to the lid being constantly moved and LCD's can go faulty at any time, just the luck of the draw in both cases.

If you can see the graphics on the screen but are faint or very dark then it means the backlight on the screen has failed.

Yes that could well be. If we know the model we can see how easy it would be to replace that.

Fixed it now. It was the screen. Got one from amazon for £32. Not sure the contrast is as good as the old one but it works. It was an HP Envy notebook so relatively easy to get the screen out.

Good to know you resolved it. Yes it could be the replacement is not as good as the old one as there's lots out there and it's probably just the luck of the draw as to getting a good one.
