Laptop defaulting to internal graphics

Hi folks,

I'm on my first Windows laptop in a decade and having a few issues.

It's a dell Inspiron 5765, i7, 16gb ram, radeon graphics card with 4gb of ram.

I bought it purely to run my Gopro fusion 360 app to edit my surf footage.

I've narrowed down the problem to the app defaulting to my internal graphics which causes it to crash during rendering 100% of the time. In task manager my radeon graphics card is at 0% so I need to somehow set it as my default.

I tried disabling the Intel graphics but gopro then tells me my graphics needs updating, I updated but still get the same result.

Can anyone give me any suggestions? I don't think it's specific to my set up as many others online seem to have the same issues with other graphics cards not being used as default.

I did have it working but had to uninstall the app and update my drivers, now it's crashing again.

So I know I can run it, but my setup is wrong. I'll make a note of settings once I get it going again.

I'm at my wits end so would really appreciate any advice

Have you tried disabling onboard graphics from Device Manager?

Generally the way multiple GPU setups work on laptop is that either the internal graphics are permanently disabled or the graphics card control panel (radeon settings) has a list of applications for which the more power GPU is enabled.

Although that's for the main GPU which most video editing apps wouldn't use during encoding. I'm not sure if it works the same way for using VCE/VCN over Quicksync.

Which editing software are you using? How have you narrowed it down to the Intel graphics causing the issue?

Which drivers did you update that caused it to start crashing? The Intel GPU ones?

Im using the GoPro Fusion Studio to render quite large 360 video files. I was trying all sorts of suggestions I found online with no success. Then it eventually started working flawlessly, but according to task manager its not using my Radeon at all, as in zero %

I had narrowed it down to the internal graphics (and im happy to be corrected) because it kept racing upto 100% then shutting down. When I previously had it using the radeon graphics card, it would not crash.

So now im in the position of currently being able to do what I need but it makes no sense to me at all.

Can you get report from the Event log?

How to View the Event Viewer Logs - Windows 10 Event logs - Techroze

Type Event Viewer in search

Click Windows Logs

Then look at the Application and System events and find the log of the event, look for with an Error with red circle next to it, and report the error back here. There maybe more than one and you post either a screenshot or the log back on here.

There may be a setting in the Gopro app to disable graphics acceleration. Alternatively try using a different app for video editing, try the windows default photo app for instance, on the latest version of windows 10 at least this can now edit video projects or post on the Gopro forum and see if they can advise.

Sorry for the delay, I spent the day yesterday trying to back up my main drive so I could install an SSD.

I couldnt get it to work so had to reinstall windows and start from scratch reinstalling everything.

Ill be setting up the GoPro app again today so will get those logs you mention if it crashes again.

Thanks for that post, its very helpful as windows is all very new to me after 6 years on a mac.
