Morning All,

I'm trying to set up a windows xp pc for some Retro fun.

I've installed and activated windows but can't get the pc to go online.

I have a network cable plugged in via ethernet from a home plug and the pc automatically downloaded and installed some xp updates and the network icon flashes correctly in the tool bar but I just can't get Internet explorer to get online.

I have a wireless card which pick up my wireless network but it keeps asking for the wep code, which the router does not use.

Do I just need to buy a new wireless USB dongle? Or is there a way to get the ethernet properly recognised as I know it must be working somehow as it automatically downloaded updates?

Thanks

Andy

Hi

Can you ping your router from command prompt when connected via home plug?

If yes try downloading google chrome and try that.

If no, may be an issue with the connection via homeplug.

WEP security is very insecure and no longer recommended for use, you need something for WPA to connect to current routers.

You could try looking up the WiFi device manufacterer and install whatever last driver they released and see if it adds WPA encryption support. WinXP prior to SP2 or SP3 (I cant recall) did not have proper native WiFi support so some vendors included their own WiFi network management tools.

WinXP is no longer supported by modern web browsers, you may have trouble installing them, you can find custom built ports of web browsers for XP here. I would not recommend browsing the web with old school Internet Explorer for security and compatibility reasons.

I'm not sure I'd worry about WEP when you're connecting a Windows XP machine to the internet.

It sounds like the internet connection is working fine though so I would focus on diagnosing and fixing whatever's wrong with internet explorer.

A description of the symptoms beyond 'can't get online' would be helpful, you could also try a different browser. Looking around 52.9.0esr appears to be the last version of Firefox that supported Windows XP
