Gaming PC upgrade advice

My son wants to upgrade his 3 year old PC to make it a more serious gaming rig. He also wants a new monitor.

He regularly plays World of Warcraft, Monster Hunter World and is getting the new the COD. Occasionally plays League of Legends as well.

His current spec is:

Intel i3 6100 3.7Ghz
Asus H110M-R  motherboard
16GB 2133mhz DDR4
Nvidia 1060 GTX
120GB SSD
1TB HDD
Windows 10 64 bit
Corsair VS450W PSU

BenQ GW2270H Full HD monitor

What are his best options to upgrade? He definitely wants a new monitor, he said he'd prefer to stay at 21-22, but I said to go to 24? 120hz or 144hz? G-sync/freesync?

Then would it be better to get a new GPU as well? Or more recent better CPU?

I have no idea for gaming! LOL!

His budget for all items would be £500-600 (and maybe a bit more (£100-200) if necessary with a loan from bank of Dad!)

For the games he plays the existing GPU should be sufficient for WoW and LoL, the Monster Hunter and newest COD may be a bit more demanding but turning details down is an option for those.

This AOC 24" monitor has won some good value review awards, it's £179, that will get you a 1080p and a 144Hz display. Nvidia can now use Freesync displays just over Displayport only connections.

With Freesync display you must often manually enable Freesync in monitors internal settings menu then enable in this case G-Sync in the Nvidia control panel. Then set the desktop resolution to 144Hz output.

The motherboard no longer supports the latest CPU's from Intel so you can either buy something from the higher tier like this for £259 of what it supports or consider replacing it altogether so you can use latest CPU's, honestly not sure what is the best path.

With those above two you have about £160 left out of the £600, if you want to move into that extra £100-200 a GeForce GTX 1660Ti is £269, that is Nvidia's newest mid tier card.

The point is he wants to play games on higher settings, not dial them back. He is earning a more in his new job so wants to splash out.

So he is now considering getting a new PC. From what I have been reading, its better for him to get a higher end GPU and a mid range CPU?

Oh and he doesn't want a curved monitor.

Been looking round and spec'd this, any suggestions on replacements?

On PC part picker, that lot (with RX 5700xt) came in at £1165, but at Palicomp, it comes in at £1201. So for the extra £36, it would be built, tested and 3 year warranty. No brainer as I would have to build it for him!

If he went with the 5700, the saved £120 pays for most of a new monitor as well.

The graphics card is more influenced by resolution and details than the CPU is.

On the other hand increased frame rates tax both equally but there's much more variation in graphics card power than CPU power.

I'd look at the options in terms of monitor tech, see which he likes the sound of and then work out if it can be done on his budget.

The new Ryzens like fast ram at least 3200 ideally 3600 also that PSU is too low powered for that setup.

I would hold off on the upgrade/replacement for just now.

With Christmas coming up and that he has is earning more then I would say -

1. Save some more so you have a bigger pot for a new machine.
2. Ask for cash for Christmas rather than items but tell people it will be going to a new PC.

Come New Year get yourself a far better setup that will kick ass !!!

He has already bought a new one now. And is very happy with it.

Just out of interest,  what did he go for?

Nearly what I put on the 25th September, but he chose the ASUS X470 Pro motherboard, the 2070 Super 8GB GPU, 16GB 3200hz RAM and a 600W PSU.

He loves it, plays all the games he plays on ultra settings. Cost around £1400 from Palicomp with fast build, 3 year warranty & delivery. He had £900 in the end anyway, they let him put that all down and paying the rest over 6 months interest free.

He's only 10 though so going to be all bank of dad
