I wonder if gopro has been it's own enemy to be honest. Whilst they charge a huge fee, other smaller companies (some with incredibly bad spelling errors in their menus) have swooped in for as little as £30-40.

GoPro created this Market I believe and Pros will use them as they are "probably" the best/most/reliable/etc.
Look-alikes are everywhere and that's their problem - which one?

Where these cameras fail IMHO is the excessive WA view --- sure, you can cut this in software, but that's really a digital zoom...losing pixels!  It's a shame they don't have alternative "housings" with 3 different lens-options.... but that would increase the price and maybe affect any water-proofing. I think Samsung managed an Optical zoom in one of their phones... so why not these cameras?
A second area, IMHO is battery-life . . . another 5mm depth could double the duration.... but there needs to be a 24-hr option, for surveillance usage. I'm not aware this exists.

Recently, GP dropped their separate housing... it was already waterproofed...but that created issues, I believe.
I have seen metal ( !) housings for GP, which allow screw-in, glass filters to be fitted....maybe a close-up lens, or starburst for effects. If only advertisers provided more detail, I might buy their Lookalike and the Housing.... as this "could" make a handy non-waterproof second camera.... dunno.

Cheers.

TBH I am big fan of gopros. I joined the family with the 6 in January and already sold it so that I can get my hands on the 7. For my amateur use it is more than enough and the ski/holiday videos are now at another level. Yes there are some glitches but the new 7 should overcome some of them.

Looking at getting something for a family holiday to Thailand next year. We've not photographers at all, have given up on cameras, just use our phones for taking snaps, but I would like something waterproof to capture some of the activities we're doing over there.

I don't want to spend a fortune, so although the GoPro Hero 7 Black looks pretty cool, I would be looking at the cheaper end of the market. Can anyone advise on weather the Hero 7 White or the 2018 Hero would be better? I've found a few things online but it talks about installing unofficial updates and things, which I can't be faffing with. So just want a straight forward comparison with a few pros and cons.

And are there any other brands I should be looking at?

thanks

I'm with Harry on this. I use a Denver ACT-5030W which is a lovely action cam, made in Denmark. It is basic but does everything I need from an action cam.
If you are charging around on bikes or skis all the time then OK but for general photography I would always stick to a camcorder.
So my money would go on a cheaper action cam and put the difference to a decent camcorder.
Denver £55.20, GoPro & £379.00
My Denver came with waterproof case, remote, camera holder, headband and stickers for helmets and a bike bracket.

Many thanks. Are there any others on the market that are waterproof without a casing?
I'm thinking I want my 2 little ones to mess about with this and it would be therefore easier if it was waterproof 24/7. And I don't want to get a camcorder, I just want something tiny to through in a bag for the family to have some fun with.

And from your knowledge on these things, if I did go down the GoPro route (probably 2nd had to be honest), any idea which is the better model, if available at a similar price. Hero 2018 v Hero 7 White?

Have a look at Panasonic's WA2, HX-WA30EB-A and HX-A1ME-D on Amazon.

Most YouTube motorcycle feeds are either Garmin or GoPro, the ones I watch use the GoPro 6, will be interesting to see if they upgrade to the 7.

You can buy 2nd hand ones for £100 off ebay.
