From what I understand, the composer still holds rights. So, for instance, you could have a model whereby the music is free to use in home movies, amateur productions and by students, whilst broadcast pays like normal every time it airs, and touring short films can be offered a one time 'buy out'. For instance. Audio Network offer buyout deals for students, where you can pay something daft like £1 to use tracks in your projects, which can then go to festivals etc.
Again, I don't fully know everything here as it's all rather complex, but what I do know is that if the composer is not on PRS, I can't use it as it basically can't be cleared. I'm not talking about 'my films', I'm talking about broadcast TV. |
