12harry,
yes, I have both VMS 10 (PlatProdS) and 11 (Plat) on the same machine in separate folders. Many of us leave the previous whole versions intact and  I for one haven't experienced problems from that so far. So it's easier to go back to the earlier version, if you're not happy with the new one. E.g. with the latest 11 builds you can render but not burn an AVCHD disc without using something like the free ImgBurn.

Some users do report about VPro 11 confusing VPro 10 though now.

BTW, For updates, Sony's recent recommendation in Vegas forums is this:

Subject:
RE: NEW Builds: Install Over? Or Uninstall Previous?

Our recommendation is to uninstall prior to installing the update.

Some don't think this is necessary, but others have had trouble with some builds installing over previous builds.

As for 11 vs. 12...one would not know of course. Hopefully a couple of v11 bugs are fixed in an update (3 of those updates so far) rather than in the upgrade. One of these is in Media Generators (Titles & Text). From SCS tech support: "There is a known issue listed in the database where the key frames move  beyond the duration of the event. This is listed to be resolved in a  future update of the application. "

So, after reading all the replys - which one is the best?
I have experience of Pinnacle Studio which I found to be very sensitive, no other programs running, clean rom etc., but as I have just had a new M/Board and Processer installed I wished to know which budget system is recommended.  I have worked with Coreldraw since it's beginnings and wondered if it may be worth while going for the Corel editing package or maybe Sony Vegas. Having read most of the replies I still have no clear answer.
The type of editing I do is from previous Mini DV tapes & current HD formats.  Mainly holidays, grandkids and the like.

There are a lot of worthwhile points made about the various programs in this thread, but
if you did not find the definitive answer here, it is because there isn't one.
Please go back to post #2 in this thread and do what the last paragraph there says.

Frankly, at the price 7 Day shop currently have Movie Studio Platinum 11 for, mentioned above, I don't think you can go wrong with that!.  They are of course Jersey based, and the UK customs regs change soon. They are clearly destocking
I have Movie Studio 10 as well as Vegas Pro 10, and often use MS 10 rather than mess about with the separate DVD generation program that is needed for the Pro version. I just looked up the Sony price in my account there to upgrade to MS 11 from 10, it would cost me £47.94 so I've taken advantage of the 7 Day shop offer! Of course the Sony prices are always RRP and don't necessarily reflect reality but even so...

Edit: Just noticed that they've put the price up to £27. Cockup I think!

bobby,
just install the new version. You can have the old version(s) on the same machine.
Just remember that the old version does not open the projects made in the upgrade version. Also if you take a v10 project to v11, it is then a v11 project. So save a copy of the old project under a different name in v10 in case you need to go back to it.

Thank you vkmast

I thought installing a new version would just install over the old one.

Has anyone had experience of Serif's Movie Studio x4 editing software?

VS v10 against v11:  As I understand it there a few improvements:
ProTitler is able to animate Text
3D editing (principally for 3D cameras).
Several "-p" formats supported now that Sony's new cameras are 50p

Not sure there is much more to make updating worthwhile - I've resisted the temptation, but would like the ProTitler.
Perhaps dual-users can say: are the Vegas Music-tracks the same...I didn't think the 400 tracks (was it), were really as good as I expected from Worldwide Sony.
If you have Production suite I think the SoundForge is the same version, so no need to  upgrade unless well-priced.

v11 contains the earlier Text (Classic?) feature so your files are correctly displayed, but others here have warned about file confusions...

Good luck.

callbrod,
since nobody's commenting on Serif here yet, you might want to take a look here
Amazon.co.uk: Customer Reviews: MoviePlus X5

12harry,
As in a previous post, I beg to still differ on upgrading to v11 of course
(see the whole list)
but  I agree that the Soundtracks are not worth too much. Since I upgraded VMS 10PPSuite to VMS 11P (only because I got the VPro in the meantime too and didn't need the Studio 11 NBFX or NBTEx), I don't know if they're exactly the same.
