Hey guys, I am looking for a decent 4K HDR TV for my parents, than can unfortunately be no bigger than 43 inches.

I was looking at last years Sony XF85, which seems like a decent set but is obviously lacking in any meaningful peak brightness for HDR.

I realise I'm not going to get "proper" HDR at 43inches due to lack of local dimming and high peak brightness, however I was wondering if this years' Sony XG83 has a higher peak brightness than the XF85? I can't find the specs anywhere and was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of this?

Thanks in advance!

I'd also be interested in hearing any advise over this. I was looking at the Samsung Q60R but the Brightness is awful which is dissapointing as it's nearly a 900 quid! So the best I could find is the Samsung 7400 but surely this Sony XG83 is better!

How do you expect to get high brightness without any form of local dimming. This is pretty much the exact same set as the XF85 in 43 and 49" (except the 49" might be IPS now as well).
The XF85 in 43" seems to peak towards the 400 nits (whereas the 55" is in the 500-550 nits range which would be quite alright for starters. 400 nits is more like the XE85 did so perhaps read a review of that model's HDR performance)
The biggest plus for this model is of course that it is a 100(120)Hz model, probably the only one around.

43" with truely high peak brightness is a Philips monitor but of course it lacks a lot of picture processing options (and is a 60Hz model).

Hi
Sorry can't answer the question about peak brightness on the XG83, but thought I'd let you know that the picture quality on my 43" XG8396 is great. I bought mine from Spain (link) for only £650 with a 2 year EU/UK warranty, as it was a huge saving over the £999 UK RRP. Though the seller has now increased the price to £785, however its still a significant saving.

I have recently purchased a 43XG8396 and I can not be happier with the image quality. I was surprised by this TV because of its contrast and deep colors to be an IPS panel as well as the numerous configuration options. At first I thought there was something wrong with the legs, but I saw that the slight tilt of the panel backwards is in order to prevent it from coming forward due to the weight. Android is also an added plus. I just need official support for Apple TV. Add that Android 8 Oreo is already available, I have updated it through a USB device.

@John Loz
Agree with you about the XG8396 being a great tv but those colours look washed out in your first pic Try 'Cinema Pro' picture mode and see the difference

@psychopomp1 Wow, this really improves the image. Now the colors look more real! Thanx for the advise

No worries, also ensure ‘auto picture mode’ is set to OFF otherwise you may lose your picture settings. Enjoy

This XG8396 is a very good TV. It looked the best amongst many other non-OLED and QLEDs when I was at Currys yesterday

The truth is that it is impressive the depth of the colors watching a bluray!
