I’d really like some double width switches....I like the combination of an electronic switch with smart bulbs at the same time - you can then fully control on-off and dimming/colour etc...

Yeah they are standard 86mm. USA versions available around 150mm, but still not quite double. Same internal requirements though.

The fact that sonoff do these is great. I expect more in the UK over the next 12 months.

Afraid not there's no neutral in there. You'd need a neutral wire to make it work.

Most British houses are built this way in fairness as there is no requirement for neutral until more recent times.

Quite a lot of new build homes have neutral there though, so there must have been a change in "standards" or good practice in the last few years.

I had the same issue in my home.  The change in practice probably was the use of Romex for just about everything (at least here in the states).
I ran new wires, since they were old cloth coated wires anyway.  However, another way to do this would be to convert one of those wires from the fixture into a neutral to power the sonoff touch You can then put a standard Sonoff relay in the fixture that turns it on and off, and have them linked via the app.  In this setup, the Touch doesn't do any of the switching, but just acts as a wifi-button.

Only limited by the fact the switch itself will always need to be "on" in order to be functional. Unless I'm mistaken, at least?

In this setup the fixture has both the hot and neutral, and there are two wires running in a single conduit to the switch. One hot, one switched.  So the fixture is always hot, the "switch" leg would be removed entirely and converted to a neutral, and bypassed through the Sonoff Relay.
