COVER GIRL is one of those Hollywood musicals that made Rita Hayworth a popular favorite with the GIs during World War II. She's at her luscious best as an actress and dancer (with a pleasant singing voice from Anita Ellis) and is in splendid form as Rusty Parker, an ambitious showgirl and Gene Kelly shines as her hoofer boyfriend.

Here's a sample paragraph describing the film from my current RITA HAYWORTH article in CLASSIC IMAGES (March, 2002):

"She certainly must have helped boost morale with her appearance in a film that many consider the finest musical of her career, dancing with Gene Kelly to a Jerome Kern score that included the Oscar-nominated Jerome Kern-Ira Gershwin tune, "Long Ago and Far Away".  The film received five Oscar nominations, and it is an enjoyable backstage yarn about a girl who must decide between Broadway stardom and the hoofer she loves.  Kelly had a typical role as a fast-talking dancer and there were good supporting roles filled by Eve Arden (highly amusing in a tailor-made role), Lee Bowman, Phil Silvers and Jess Barker.

It was considered inventive and way ahead of most musicals of the period. The director was her favorite, Charles Vidor and it won an Oscar for Best Musical Score."
