Going on holiday soon, so I will be using the hotel WiFi. So as I doubt that the WiFi will be secure, I was looking at getting a VPN for my android phone.

Any recommendations?

Also how do I block the pop up ads that appear at the bottom of the screen when browsing AVForums on my phone?

Brave browser is a good one to block all the stuff on avforums.

The question regarding WiFi is a difficult one. Sure WiFi can be insecure, but the real point is whether the website you are connecting to is secure. If you have https encryption enabled then there is little the WiFi access point can do. If it does try and break the https connection by inspecting the payload then you should get a certificate warning. Never just say trust to those kind of certificate warnings. In many ways it is no different with a vpn connection. An insecure WiFi could still attempt a man in the middle attack.

So personally I wouldn’t recommend going down that route. Unless you want to hide your location, or destinations, or perhaps want to watch tv from another country. Or do stuff that is against the terms and conditions of the WiFi.

you can get VPN's that you can subscribe to for a month if it concerns you that much for as little as 2 or 3 quid with no long contract.

I just wanted to make my phone more secure on a public network. Who knows who else is on the network.

TouchVPN used to be good, but they moved to a premium model and now some of the countries are locked behind their pay-wall. The country you want might still be one of the free choices though.

Another free one I've used is Turbo VPN.

I would never connect to random wifi without VPN. You have no idea if your searches are spoofed and the DNS servers are directing you to a scam site.  In the blink of an eye you just lost your account to XYZ.com That is just one example.
Especially if your going on holiday, you will not be as vigilant, and you only have to let your guard down for a second.

Whilst I agree to an extent - Most main holiday resorts/hotels are hardly likely to be doing anything like that - reputation would disappear very quickly.

Sure but I was also thinking shopping centres, coffee shops ect.  The best way free would be an openvpn tunnel to your home router if it supported it, using  your DNS of choice to esure  you are on the site you think you are.
It might seem a hassle  for most but better safe than sorry.
I do appreciate most people don't want to be bothered though.
