How to minimise battery and data usage?

I have just got a Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini mobile for the single purpose of running a Golf GPS app. I do not intend using it as a phone, purely to run this app!

It has a SIm card with data on it as the app needs access to internet. The only other thing needed is the location service.

I would like to switch off/remove as much as I can to minimise use of battery and data. Can anyone suggest what (and how) to achieve this, please?

At the moment, it still pops up with notifications for news stories, etc. and from ESPN. Plus the Play store seems to be using data.

I do not need any of this or synchronising or emails or anything like that!
