Starting at the end of the story with no beginning or middle is, not surprisingly, an extremely confusing way to set out any problem

I would point out "Crete" and "Spain" are very large geographical areas. Specificity matters when it comes to mobile network coverage

Anyway in very simple terms your plusnet (EE network) sim has no roaming signal in Crete and Spain when installed in your Nokia. However your plusnet (EE) sim has roaming signal in Crete when installed in your wife's phone

Your wife's Tesco (o2) sim installed in your Nokia has roaming signal in Spain when installed in your Nokia. It appears you have not yet tested the Tesco (o2) sim installed in the Nokia when in Crete

After verifying that roaming is still enabled in your plusnet account, I would suggest trying a replacement plusnet sim before resorting to buying a new handset to replace the Nokia

I get your comments. I cannot win whatever I write. Let me say that my Plusnet SIM and Nokia 5, have been together since April 2018, with no issues until May 2019. Before my problems, have been to Greece and Spain lots and lots, so carrier bandwith issues and so forth, something of a red herring, as have been using roaming services abroad on all the Greek and Spanish networks for years, with different phones and network services.

Is there some minimal damage to my SIM that the Nokia phone fails to pick up on when abroad, but LG phones do?? So my thinking for the last few days has been to contact plusnet, get a new SIM and try again when abroad. I was actually hoping that someone would ask me to do this. It might not explain why I get 4g abroad in my wife's phone, but you never know.

Whilst you were away did you try and manually connect to a network in Spain using the Nokia?

I'm wondering if the apn settings have been knocked out due to an update? I don't know the full ins and outs but if you put your wife's sum in the Nokia and that works I'm wondering if it automatically changes the apn for O2 and when you put your plusnet sim back in then it reverts to the wrong settings.

Yes both in Crete and Spain, I switched off the "automatic network selection" and tried every network that would let me connect without success.

However, it was already in my mind about the update, because there was a major update between roaming working abroad, and then suddenly not.

I know this is a separate thing from a major android update, but Nokia, amongst all the other suggestions did ask me to uninstall updates of carrier service app.

I have been in touch with network provider Plusnet today and they are sending me a new SIM. Of course I won't know if it works until I travel to Spain again in 3 weeks. Fingers crossed.

I might be, and probably am, wrong but if the apn settings are incorrect then it won't let you connect to another carrier anyway.
