Had an early night last night as I was feeling ill so had an hour on this in bed. Played through the forest course doing the handicap round and then the championship. Even with the first course there isn't much margin for error. Hit an eagle and a lot of birdies over 18 holes and still only just won it by 3 shots. Played a few challenges which involved collecting a star coin on a hole and achieving par. This requires you to properly plan your shots so you can collect the coin and still leave yourself with a decent lie to approach the green. Other challenges involved hitting the ball through gold rings en route to the green. Finally I took part in an online tournament (Mario open) which involved just picking Mario as the player and then achieving your best score. I didn't check the leaderboards but I ended with a -7 so will find out my overall ranking when the tournament ends in 5 days
As for the gameplay anyone that's played everybody's golf will feel right at home with this. Its the tried and trusted 3 click method. One to start the power, another to set it and a third to get the accuracy. After the swing you can tap button combinations to add backspin and topspin. These are also laid out on the bottom screen so you can quickly tap one instead of the buttons. Around certain courses as well you can collect special powers. Mushrooms make the ball pick up speed when it lands, bullet bill makes the ball fly in a straight line. Boomerangs hit a curve shot, fireflower enables you to blast it through trees.
There are probably others I haven't come across yet. The power ups add an extra dimension to the game without being overpowered. You use them wrong and you get punished. For example I used the boomerang power to curl my shots round some trees to try and take a shortcut but mis judged how much the ball would bend so it ended up flying off the course.
Overall its a very fun game. The only negatives can be the putting, mainly reading the greens. The grid can sometimes be difficult to read due to the low res 3DS screen but its a minor issue and I'm sure in time I will improve in this area.
Overall I really like it. The core gameplay and single player campaign may not be as tight or lengthy as Everybody's golf on the vita but the additional Nintendo charm and superior online features more then make up for it.
