How are these games? Good for the analytical mind that enjoys puzzles? Or is it more geared towards kids?

I haven't play PL Vs PW yet but I'm a huge fan of both series. I'd say both franchises are more geared towards adults than kids. Layton has actual math/logic/spacial puzzles to solve whereas Phoenix Wright involves a lot of logical thinking.

If you're looking to get into them the DS games are dead cheap nowadays and well worth picking up.

If anyone is interested in trying the first 3DS Layton, Mask of Miracles, Zavvi have it for £15 at the moment. A bargain, considering it's hard to find in shops now.

Does it matter if the games are not played in order of release? Just been thinking of getting one myself!

I snapped and picked up Mask of Miracles plus Wii U Rayman Legends in the 2 for £25 offer

The Phoenix Wright games are best played in order; there are some big plot points you might spoil otherwise.

The second trilogy of Layton games also have an overall story arc, but I don't think there are any big spoilers if you don't play them in order.
