Question external hard drive

Hi,

son has an xbox one s and has filled up the 500gb drive, what is the maximum external drive it will take. I am looking at a usb powered and needs to be usb 3, this is what I have been told.

Max size allowed is 16 Terabytes but of course nothing reaches that as a standalone HDD.

The best option for external HDD were you want capacity & performance is to buy a hybrid SSD/HDD drive then stick that into an external enclosure. The Xbox One works remarkably well with hybrid drives delivering most of the performance of a pure SSD (X1S features a hybrid drive internally).

If you look on Amazon for SSHD you will find these hybrid drives, the 2.5 models run off the USB power in the cable whereas the 3.5 require their own power supply in a third party enclosure.

If you don't care about any of that just buy a Western Digital Passport which is their USB bus powered 2.5 external product line.

The Samsung(now Maxtor) M3 is very good.
I  originally bought a 2TB for my X1 but soon started filling it up.
Bought a 4TB and swapped the 2TB to my 360.
Both work fine with the consoles.
I have about 112 games installed on my X1, ranging from 100GB  down to just a few GB, and I've still got 50% total storage.
They're not SSDs, but if it's just the extra storage you're after, they do the job and are reasonably priced.

I'd read that a lot of people in here seemed to have the Samsung M3 and rated it highly. When I looked on Amazon I saw they're now Maxtor rather than Samsung but appears to be a Seagate product? I didn't think Seagate were particularly highly rated? Is the Maxtor any good? The price isn't too bad - £68 for 2TB or £119 for 4TB, but a few reviews say it's slow?

I've got the Samsung models.
I can't compare to other HDDs for speed as I haven't tried any others.
I'd say it's about the same speed as the X1 internal HDD.
If it's any faster I can't see the difference.
It's reliable, though.
I've had the 2TB since May 2015, and the 4TB for just over a year and I haven't had any issues with either.
