I need to upgrade the HDD in my launch PS4. I've read the instructions on how to do it and had a look at a 1TB HDD that was recommened from Amazon for £69 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-5400RPM-Laptop-ST1000LM014-Hybrid/dp/B00BHRWHNI/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1467987055&sr=8-3&keywords=seagate SSHD 1TB for the PS4&linkCode=sl1&tag=tr_opinion_howtohhdup-21&linkId=406316727d2fbfc21aef937bb9d986b3).

I have however read that a 2TB HDD from an external HDD can be taken out and used in the PS4. This is available from Amazon for £67.99 so is obviously more appealing. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/External-Devices-Data-Storage/Seagate-Expansion-2TB-Portable-inch-Hard-Drive/B00TKFEE5S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478864527&sr=8-1&keywords=seagate expansion 2tb usb 3.0 portable 2.5 inch external hard drive&tag=av0c-21)

Does anyone know how easy it is to open it up and remove the 2TB drive? And does anything need to be done with it prior to removing it and sticking it in the PS4?

Hi. I don't know how easy it is to remove a hdd from a case but I've just replaced the drive in my pro with this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01M1UQQT5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I know it's more than the two you mention, but it's a great drive and was extremely easy to install. Alternatively, you can connect an external hdd to one of the usb ports on the ps4 and not bother with installing it if you prefer..

I've just come across this that answers the question in the original post - How to cheaply upgrade your PS4 to 2TB - looks easy enough!

I had ps4 and now have ps4 pro.

I brought a Seagate external 2tb hard drive in a black case from Argos was about 50-60 quid.

Took it out case and was easy to open it and installed in my normal ps4.  Then when i got my pro I took it out old ps4 installed it into my pro and sold my ps4.

Works perfectly and still going ok.

But i would have look around for a SSD they cost bit more but they load games faster then HDD.

Oh to add the ps4 had a firmware update to let you use a external HDD in usb port so you haven't got take it out case.

Leave HDD in your ps4 and use the 2tb external plugged into front usb port of ps4 or rear back of pro.

So u have 1tb inside and 2tb in case

Thanks for that! I have ordered the 2TB one in the original post and will just take it out and stick it in the PS4. I prefer to have it all inside rather than mess about with an external one too

That looks like my hdd with that carbon effect on ex case.

Yeah simple to do,  you may need a pen drive for ps4 firmware as new hdd. You download from Sony site it's 800-900 meg.

You don't get full 2tb after ps4 installation bout 1.72tb

If u want fast loading times go for SSD.

Thanks.

I've downloaded the firmware from here: PS4 System Software  - it was only about 400mb, but I assume it's the correct one as it's the latest?

There are 2 different downloads on that page, for a new hdd you have to use the 2nd (hidden) bigger download. On the page you linked to you need to scroll right to the bottom, expand "perform a new installation of the system software" use the download link in step 2.
