4K TV for PS Pro Gaming, advice needed

I'm upgrading my console gaming rig - tempted too much by the current deals.
So I'm selling my fat PS4 500GB and getting a PS4 Pro 1TB and throwing in a VR starter bundle for good measure.

I currently have a fantastic 55" Samsung 1080p TV that's about 5 or 6 years old that has seen me through my console gaming in the last 2 years. It use to be the main TV but we upgraded to an LG 4K OLED which is great, really love the LG UI and remote.

I'm looking at LG 4K TVs but I can't afford to get a 55" OLED (or any OLED for that matter) they are too expensive for the amount of time I would be using it, around 4-8 hours a week, sometimes a little less, so I can't justify it - plus my other half has put his metaphoric foot down.

I've been looking at the LG 55SJ850V which seems to be a 2017 model that is starting to see some good reductions, £699 at John Lewis and other places. It uses the LG super UHD tech. But it's so bewildering when trying to compare specs'. Also hard to find reviews for gaming purposes that aren't so generic and don't really tell me anything. I am not wedded 100% to the idea of an LG. Really £699 is the maximum I'd want to pay, ideally less. But I want the best bang for my buck.

Anybody with experience of 2017 or early 2018 models of the 55" variety for gaming use, you thoughts about the pros/cons of your set would be much appreciated.

Now is probably the worse time to buy a TV. The models I would have suggested and listed as decent HDR TVs in the guide: My best value TVs, 2017 Edition have all but sold out.

When they were readily available at 55" they were selling close to £1300/£1000 s that gives you an idea of the kind of budget needed to afford a capable HDR TV.

And that brings me to the most important point, at a budget of around £700 you simply cannot get a TV that will display HDR to a decent standard, my suggestion would be to save up and keep an eye on the pricing of 2018 models like the Sony XF9005 and Samsung Q7FN to come down in price and swoop for those.

If you can't wait and need to buy now the best compromise would probably be the Samsung 55MU7000 which is well priced at the moment but its HDR performance is questionable at best. This, providing you don't need wide viewing angles is a much better overall TV than the LG you have been looking at.

LG LCDs are generally very poor and I don't recommended them unless people prefer wider viewing angles over superior picture quality from the front.

This may give you an idea of when 2018 models become more reasonably priced: The best time to buy a TV tldr black friday toward as much as circa 10 months from now.

The key to getting the best value for money isn't just which model you go for, but also the time you buy, with newly released models costing as much as 40% more on release than their price a year later.

But don't worry, there are still advantages to still gaming at 1080p such as being able to game on the PS4 pro at higher frame rate with higher quality textures. Many people will disagree with me but UHD gaming is really there yet, not until the consoles are able to pump out high enough frame rates for a smooth experience anyway.

A recent thread where someone has seen really bad motion blur playing at UHD at 30hz vs FHD at 60hz: https://www.avforums.com/posts/26285259/

Hope this helps.

With new models coming in now surely it's the best time to buy because high end models of 2017 will be heavily discounted.

What is it that is so poor about the LGs? I know that in the stores they always show demo videos to make the TVs look their absolutely best but honestly the demo LG 55SJ850V looked just as good as the demo Samsung and Sonys that had price tags of > £1K.  In addition it cost £700 now it was £900 tail end of last year which is about the same price as the best compromise Samsung you recommended when that first came out.

Looking at your "should I upgrade" post, the 2 reasons for a yes are:
- I will be sitting around 1.2 m away from a 55" screen.
- I will be gaming on a new console with support for it.

The linked post with video of 30fps motion judder I didn't think was a problem. I mean how often do you stand in a room spinning in a circle as fast as you can - never, because that's not how you play games. So I don't thing that will be a big problem.

Urgh! It's all so complicated. The problem is according to the linked post about best time to buy, the best time is now. But a model that cost £2K  12 months ago that is still £1100 is just too expensive.
