Both my PS2 slim won't read discs.

Hi

I have 2 PS2 slim, I want to play some older games. The first one I got a year ago, played 2 games, ran fine then I didn't play for a year.
The second one I just got and it read 1 game out of 4. I have cleaned the discs and the lenses.
I think for some reason I m doing something wrong.
I hooked up the 3 colored cables to an HD TV. Could that be the problem?
I read online to get a HDMI adaptor.
It seems to me I must be doing something wrong.
I get the main playstation screen where it says "browser/System configuration". I can browse the various configurations, change settings, go into the save card menu and that's it. No game will load in either (Beside for one).
