I think this generation is a weird hybrid of the past meeting future. Ultimately it could end up being similar to what PC gamers have now, eg, being able to play all released games on all platforms going forward. It's also the first time digital is making a real challenge to physical games in the console arena, I can only see physical disk continue to drop in sales for future iterations, especially if the store fronts play their cards right.
Remasters have unfortunately become two a penny, once that door was opened, so many games have run through it. Ports of PC games have come to console in spades and indie games have moved more and more centre stage. There's plenty to be positive about all this, but what is squeezed is dev time on new IP or even new iterations of big game series, leading to delays or half assed day one releases.
But I love the choice you have gaming on console now and for me its the cheapest generation for gaming ever, especially if you're patient. Free to play, subscription games, regular sales and deals, demos, betas, you could pretty much spend zero if you so wished and still bank many hours of gaming a week. |
