I'm an avid cyclist but due to weather and darkness I've dropped from 70  miles a week to about 25. I was thinking of going spinning but have heard it's really hard work.

Has anyone got any advice that would give me the upmh I need to take the first step and go for it? Is it true that you can clip into the pedals? Any info would be great.

I am a spin instructor, amongst other things, anyone can spin, even beginners. If you are used to cycling you will be unlikely to have any issues.

Most spin bikes have SPDs or toe clips or both. You are in control, you choose how hard/fast you spin.

Go for it.

That's great - just looked online and there's a class at my gym tomorrow at 6pm so am going to head in there. My first thought was to cycle there but don't really want to leave my £800 bike outside! So I'll drive

I used to love spin, would do two to three classes a week.  It was great fun, the lights would be turned down, disco lights on, and a fun time had by all.

One of the biggest things to remember is to do what you feel you can do, the biggest mistake new people would make is try and keep up with the regulars, too often people would come and then never appear again.  If you need to turn down resistance do it, if you need a breather take it, if a certain position hurts or doesn't feel right just do another, stuff what everyone else is doing or may think as they all went through it too.

Some spin instructors will try to get you to get in really silly positions on the bike like having your hips low between the saddle and handles. This is dangerous so don't be afraid to not follow some of the instructions. You are in control.
