Are franchised fast food outlets relying more on promotion discounts to entice customers?

After spending all day driving I couldn't be arsed to cook so I phoned my local Dominos pizza shop to get some down and dirty fodder for me and Mrs C. nothing special, two pizzas and some chicken goujons (for delivery).

The guy at the shop wanted to charge me 286 squillion million pounds, can't remember the exact amount but it was obscene. He was quite apologetic and asked me If I had promotional vouchers or discount codes. I didn't so the price was fixed. I live in a student area, there are hundreds of inexpensive fast food outlets. I ordered elsewhere.

Do you think these sort of establishments have a policy to rip folk off if you're not part of their social networking discount ethos?

Pizza Express seems to be much the same.

In short, no.
Certainly in the case of Domino, I don't think being enrolled to their social media results in any better prices than their 'meal deals' section of their website.
But I agree it's a complete rip off.
Our daughter asked for Domino for her 12th birthday tea last week.
Even with a 'buy two get third free' offer, we were over £26.00 for 24 slices of pizza.
£1.08 a slice is outrageous.
As the wife pointed out, we could have fed us all for less than £20 from the local chinese.
And that's prepared by a trained chef, not a production line of minimum wage students.

However, "we" (not meaning anyone in particular) must be happy and willing to pay their rates, otherwise the business model wouldn't work - and it patently does.  You can say exactly the same for McD's, Wetherspoons, or anyone else.

Anyway, if you want Pizza, heading to a Chinese isn't going to be very satisfying.

I can't get my head around any adult who'd prefer pizza to practically any other type of takeaway, But, as you say, they must be out there.
If the kids fancy a domino, we tend to go on a Tuesday only (BOGOF).
It makes acceptable value then.
But only then.

So can we now add Pizza to the list of eating experiences you cannot comprehend?

So That's:
BBQ,
Roasts,
Pizza.

Have I left anything out?

Anything on the bone.
Coleslaw.

Anyway, just checked an email we got from Domino after last week's abhorrence and there are no special discount codes there at all.
Unless email doesn't count?
I've no intention of liking Domino on Facebook, or following them on twitter, to find out if there are discounts there.

FWIW I've always found Domino's to be expensive. Also, they're nothing special.

And that's possibly because you've eaten s*** pizzas. The trick with Pizzas is the temperature, 400 degrees plus, apparently the best pizzas are fired at ~750 degrees. I've seen my local Pizza Express' ovens set to 375 - p*** poor, leccy saving.
