I told my GP my knees were hurting and getting worse and she referred me to knee specialist the following week. He sent me for an mri a week later. This was all on the NHS as well.  I think I'm just lucky with the area I currently live in that referrals take no time at all and I have no need to go private even though I have health care through my work.

Generally though you'll need to tell your gp that your knee is stopping you from doing everyday activities and really big it up. Hopefully that puts you to the top of the pile.

I walked into GP's room, explained i had knee pain and that I'd already tried massage, rest, stretching, chiropractor, etc. He referred me straight away, had MRI scan a few weeks later. Thankfully mine was a non-surgery fix. I suffered from chondromalacia patella and was able to resolve it with physio exercises and no damage was done. All my other cartilage was in tip top condition, which i was happy  and surprised about.
