Floor Insulation Questions

Hi All,

I have recently bought a Victorian Terraced house that has the unsulation qualities of a teabag.  There are more drafts than a board game shop (did you see what I did there!).

Anyway I have bought some zero carbon rolls of wool for the loft - well 50 rolls to be precise.  However this should be more than enough to cover the 100 sq.m which is too much (deliberately).

The plan we have is to lift the carpets and expose the wooden floors, have them sanded then varnished  However my concern is that a lot of cold air will come up from underneath the house as there is about 3-4 feet of space under the floor.

I was thinking of using the rolls of wool underneath the floor and then using Netting (costs about £40 for 200 sq.m) to hold it in place.

Does this sound like a good idea or are there major reasons against doing this?
If I do this Do I neeed to consider air-flow like you do in the attic?

Cheers

You need to consider Air flow - and that means air flow around at least a good portion of the joists.

We ended up (after an argument with a rather stupid BCO), installing 50mm thick celotex, which after ensuring all the air bricks were fully clean and open, and after clearing a good skip full of rubbish from under the floor, provided sufficient ventialation for the 100mm joists.

Does BCO=Business Control Officer?

I assume my joists will be 100mm but how do I ensure airflow round the joists?

I have about 3ft of space between the joists & the ground on which the house sits. If I put insulation in between the joists & hold that insulation in with netting does that ensure airflow round the joists.

The reason I think there is airflow is the floor is always cold especially during winter as it is at the moment.
