We have electric underfloor heating in our bathrooms and kitchen - they are only there to heat the tiled floors, not the rooms - so we only have them on in the morning and evening for a few hours, just like a towel-rail. The main bathroom floor heated area is about 6 sq m, the en-suite just 3 sq m. The kitchen is larger at around 15 sq m.
There are on electronically programmed timers. The kitchen one has a thermostat in the floor, and cuts out when the floor temp reaches the set value. They were put in by the electrician when we renovated the kitchen & bathrooms 8 or-so years ago.
I would use a hydronic system on a whole-house build, but for a one room renovation the electric system
would be most practical.
Yes, they are a luxury item, but they are worth it to avoid that cold tile feeling first thing in the morning, and when you brush your teeth before bed.
I think that the underfloor mats in the bathrooms are by warm-up, the kitchen one was supplied by the electrician. What I do remember them saying to the tiler was that he (the tiler) would have to pay for a new mat if it didn't work , as the electrician tested it after he had done his bit. I'm sure that the heat mat is just about the same - it is the quality of the installation that matters here, plus how fancy the programmable controller is.
No idea how much they cost to run, but don't they can't be breaking the bank, as our electricity use is pretty minimal. What price warm feet? |
