Surely it's time to have stricter sentences for drink-driving deaths

You have no idea what may or may not have happened in my life to assume my views would change. If there are repeat offenders then rehabilitation is not working. Rehabilitation is not about being soft on people but making them think differently. I am all for leaving people in prison who have not changed.
If prison is such a walk in the park then how does 20yrs in their  help? Surely if 6 is easy then 20 would be superb in the wonderful hotel that is prison.
So what is a suitable sentence? The girls lives can never be returned so how does 20yrs make it better than 6. Would 14 be ok? Or 16?
Fundamentally we have different outlooks on this and doubt we will ever agree or change our minds to the other view point.
Personally i would like to see stronger penalties for the offences leading up to these i.e. the 'near misses'. So longer bans for drink driving or using mobile phones and no bring let off a ban since it may cause you hardship. That way we can hopefully head the issues off before someone unfortunately dies.

You have to take that comment in the context of the crime commited and not just in general.

There you go again. Exaggerating what other's say. I never said prison is wonderful. You'd do well to stick to what has actually been said.

The concept is that having your freedom taken away is a form of punishment in itself so longer sentences are more punishing.

And to answer one of your previous questions - yes, I absolutely believe that if it was general knowledge that prison terms were longer then people would both be consciously and subconsciously less inclined to risk imprisonment.

Do you have a link where I said that (including your recent edit)?

Why I ask is because my memory is not very good.

You thought it was ok for buzz aldrin to punch that guy for calling him a liar and not get charged with assault. You thought it was ok for him to do so because buzz aldrin was a "legend" who'd walked on the moon and his "achievements" gave him every right to assault someone For calling him a liar. At least that's how it read to me.

I think it was in the now locked faked moon landing thread in general chat, at least I think it was you. My memory's not the greatest either so it might have been someone else

Off the top of my head I can't remember if it was Alan or not but as the two situations are in no way comparable I don't think it matters.

This is my post #523 in that thread (cut and paste):

"The moon landings took place a long time ago and passed into history, the men involved have become legends and rightly so.

Mr Chubby obviously had an agenda and was constantly hounding Buzz to carry out some unnecessary archaic ritual which has no meaning whatsoever in that particular context. Mr Chubby failed in his repeated attempts and I'm surprised at Buzz's forbearance against such stupidity.

However, Buzz made a mistake by punching Mr Chubby because there are many Mr Chubbys about unfortunately, and he can't punch them all."

A little different to your take on my post don't you think?

No problem. Like Iron giant said it was another person i was relying too with that comment.
I suppose I fundamentally do not agree with one action defining a person. We have no idea what this guy is like. He could have done loads of good for society and then made on stupid choice when drunk. Does that make him now a fully terrible person? Could he do more to make up for this one action inside or outside prison? Or he could be truly horrible person who does this sort of thing and has no remorse etc. Each scenario needs to be handled differently.
