The star of the show is obviously Jeremy Corbyn and he really loves being adored as some kind of cult saviour. The Momentum members have carefully expunged any traditional Labourite that might add some discord to the proceedings. So one of the first tasks will be a vote on whether Sadiq Khan will be allowed to speak!
Other lifetime and respected luminaries like Chuka Umanna, Andy Burnham will not be given a seat at the top table, as they are regarded with suspicion.
So we can expect lots of criticism of the Conservatives and lots of cries of the 'Many not the Few'.
Corbyn says he is handing the party back to the people (activists?) , so more speeches from them and less from the big guns.
But what we should be hearing about is Labour's policies. This time they should be properly costed. i.e not just empty election promises like lifting pay caps, open cheque for NHS, free Uni tuition and cancelling loans.
We do want to hear a clear statement on where Labour stand on Brexit. And this should be something that will realistically be accepted by the EU. So while Jeremy may say he wants to remain in the Single market, the EU will certainly not agree if Labour are taking us out of the EU.
Of course, many members want Jeremy to state that Labour will keep the UK in the EU!
Quite honestly, this conference might be rather alarming for traditional working class, lifetime labour supporters. |
