To simplify things I'd imagine it will be 40p a unit per vessel of alcohol rather than across a whole transaction.

I'm quite happy with people drinking themselves to death as long as they know the score. Die early and reduce the cost of pensions and long term care. We don't need a nanny state for that.

Those that are using hospital time through fighting and car accidents should be made to pay for it.

They said they are targeting older wealthier drinkers in the cutting down on regular boozing but I'd have thought many of them are spending more than £4.50 on a bottle of wine anyway

So I can't see it having much effect at all on that section of the population

I'm pretty confident it won't have any effect. The supermarkets will be able to lessen the impact of the price increase, as they always do. In the event that they don't, those hooked on drink will pay the higher prices and carry on as usual. It's the same with smokers. People always seem to be able to find something else to cut back on, regardless of how little money they have, just so they can carry on drinking/smoking as usual.

My guess here is, apart from the very, very rich, if you're drinking about a bottle of wine a night (the target group, in this category) you'll be spending 5-£10 for a bottle of wine at the weekend, but on more basic stuff midweek.

Someone's drinking all those boxes of Pinot Grigio and Merlot, you know.  And it's not people pre-loading for 8 pints of Stella or 12 bottles of Bitch ****.

Those wine boxes cost what? £15-£16 a box?  So they'll go up to mind boggling £18 a box... I can't see that stopping many.

Wine boxes have recently moved to 3 bottles (they used to be 4 bottles) and £12-£13 each).

They'll go up to £14 each, and no room for reductions.

I remember Geoffrey Archer saying he'd never pay less than £50 for a bottle of claret, and that's when you could get a perfectly decent bottle of Grande Puy Ducasse for £20.

The tit.
