When the Euro started the argument from Europhiles was that the Euro would be strong, the pound weak and we should join it. Since then the opposite happened with the pound strong and the euro weaker, but the same "experts" still argued we should have the Euro anyway.
So I tend to be sceptical when so many of these "experts" are so biased.
It also hasn't been beneficial.
Only Germany and the Netherlands have benefitted.
CEP study: Germany gains most from euro introduction | DW | 25.02.2019
Outside of Germany and the Netherlands, the trend for the bloc was a drop in prosperity.
In France, this fall amounted to €3.6 trillion and in Italy €4.3 trillion. These reductions equate to €56,000 and €74,000 per capita respectively.
One of the main reasons for the drop in prosperity was international competitiveness, according to the report.
Before the introduction of the euro, countries were able to devalue their currencies to make their exports cheaper on the world market.
This made them more competitive globally and was a tool used to pull countries out of economic difficulty. |
