The passports are still red colour though, so Twitter shouldn't be getting too upset.

there was "Twitter upset" on both sides
- some because they just missed out on the removal, some because it was removed

Will be more twitter snowflakes on both sides, possibly three sides, even four or five, when it switches to a colour that it never ever was

The removal is cosmetic and in theory no big deal.  However, the words 'European Union' are known and understood across all languages as meaning visa free movement across the Schengan area.  It would be most unfortunate if, through misunderstanding and the loss of those key words, access or rights were mistaken denied by local officials.

Of course, after Brexit we know we are losing such privileges (for example in the EU after any transition period we will need to use to have a visa for extended stays in Schengen) but there is no need to pre-empt it given we don't known how long it will be before we are denied such rights.

It is not cosmetic as it means, as a country, we are no longer part of the EU.

Secondly, 'European Union' in the case of the U.K. was hardly a banner for Schengan as we were not part of that agreement - and we could still move around.

You see, this is what I mean.  If Cliff considers that the removal of the words 'European Union' from a passport means that the individual is no longer a citizen of the EU, then others may think so as well.  Until exit day, whenever that may be, British citizens - as EU citizens - enjoy various rights and benefits that shouldn't be denied to them until after exit day.

So is it or isn't it cosmetic?

Oh I'm sure that the immigration authorities across the EU won't know how to check a passport. If it doesn't have the words European Union on it, you'll definitely not be allowed to cross a border.
