Hi, my father in law had just been given a guitar by a relative who has sadly passed away. He wants to keep it, but obviously would like to learn how to use it.
For Christmas we are on strick budgets (no one's got any money ), so wondering what you would recommend for him to link his normal AKG headphones into his electric guitar?
I've seen the Vox Amplugs, but they seem to cost around £35, also seen cheaper ones but also concerned about them breaking as mentioned in a few reviews.
Could I get a cheap headphone amp and run an 1/4" to twin rca connection from the guitar to it?
Cheers for any info.

No, the level from the guitar will likely be much too low.

You should be able to get a used Amplug for nearer your budget but I wasn't very impressed with the one I had & promptly got rid. Others disagree.

Best bet may be to have a trawl of your local Gumtree or Ebay sellers for a small practice amp with  a headphone socket. The sort of thing that comes with a cheap starter pack where the owner may have upgraded. May even be worth a punt on Freecycle. If it's only for headphone use them something with a damaged speaker would do.

Here's some possibilities. You'll need to check they have headphone sockets, although I can see the Fender does.

Guitar amp | Old Swan | Gumtree

Amp  | Liverpool | Gumtree

Fender Practise Amp  | Manchester | Gumtree

You've probably already sorted it now but I'd go with a mini practise amp over a headphone amp too, more control over the volume/tone and less likely to break.

Another alternative would be a battery operated multi-effects pedal. Something like a Zoom 505II can be picked up for £20. Old tech now but still plenty of sounds to play with.

Or a Pocket Pod, great in the summer for outdoor playing, just plug in headphones and jam away, great variety of tones too, they usually go for anywhere between £20-40 s/h. Wish I'd kept mine now.

Something newer like a Behringer GDI-21 amp modeller (Sansamp GT2 clone) would do the job too. I was looking at one for DI recording with my amp, only £28 new from amazon or Gear4music and it has a nice array of amp & cab sims. It might not be very loud without a proper amp but I'm pretty sure it would work as a headphone amp and it's battery operated too.

Cheers for the ideas, he's only really going to be using at at home so mains powered would be best.
Should be picking up one of the amps via Gumtree next week, got him a cable for it as well so should all be sorted...no idea why that idea didn't enter my head.
Might look at the other pods you spoke about for myself though...once I get my guitar fixed.
